Cataracts

If you have developed a cataract from age or trauma, Tucson Eye Physicians will evaluate you to determine if cataract surgery will aid your vision. Our service provides mono-focal implants and multi-focal implants, Toric implants, and Limbal Relaxing Incision for astigmatism.

Understanding Cataracts

A cataract is a clouding effect in the lens inside the eye that causes vision loss that is not correctable with traditional methods like glasses or contact lenses. Cataracts must be corrected by surgery.

Don’t let this scare you. Cataract surgery is still a surgical procedure that should be taken seriously, but it is common. The National Eye Institute estimates that nearly 70% of all Americans over 80 years of age had cataracts as of 2010.

Cataract surgery is an outpatient procedure that does not require a stay in a hospital. Nevertheless, Tucson Eye Physicians does recommend having a friend or family member drive you home after the surgery.

What Happens in Cataract Surgery?

Cataract surgery is replacing the clouded lens of the patient’s eye with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens. This procedure restores clear vision and, in many cases, improves vision enough to reduce dependence on eyeglasses or contacts.

Tucson Eye Physicians uses the LENSAR® Laser System to perform cataract surgery. With this technology, your ophthalmologist will be able to use a unique imaging system to get a 3-D view of your eye before the surgery ever begins. This makes the surgery more precise, it can reduce recovery time, and it is completely customized to your unique eye.
After your Tucson Eye Physicians ophthalmologist has removed all remnants of the clouded lens of your eye, he will insert the intraocular lens securely behind the iris and pupil, in the same place that the natural lens previously occupied.
